The Old Town of Kościan is a quintessential example of medieval urban design in the Greater Poland region. Founded in the 13th century, the town flourished as a major center for cloth production, becoming one of Poland's wealthiest cities during the late Middle Ages. The central Market Square serves as the heart of the historic district, surrounded by burgher houses that were largely rebuilt in the neoclassical style following 19th-century fires. The town's most prominent landmark is the 14th-century Gothic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose monumental scale and artistic altars attest to the town's historical importance. Remnants of the original defensive walls and the town's location along the Obra River add to its historical character. The neo-Gothic Town Hall, featuring a distinctive tower, stands at the square's center and now houses the regional museum. Kościan successfully maintains its historic charm, providing an authentic look into the past of a prosperous manufacturing hub.
