Kościan Basilica (Poland)

Weather…

The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kościan is a significant late Gothic hall church located in the Greater Poland region. The construction of the current brick edifice commenced in the 14th century and reached completion in the late 15th century, replacing an earlier religious structure. The basilica is distinguished by its monumental scale and its five-aisle layout, which reflects the historical wealth of Kościan as a prominent medieval trading hub. Its most prized artistic possession is the late Gothic high altar, a magnificent triptych dating from the early 16th century, created in the style of the renowned master Veit Stoss. The interior is also adorned with fine Baroque side altars, historical epitaphs, and an intricately decorated pulpit. Recognizing its profound historical and artistic importance, Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to the rank of Minor Basilica in 2010. Today, the basilica serves as the premier landmark of Kościan, preserving centuries of religious art and showcasing the architectural prowess of the medieval era.
