Kalisz Archaeological Reserve (Poland)

Weather…

The Kalisz Archaeological Reserve in Zawodzie is a premier historical site protecting the remnants of one of Poland's oldest settlements. Established in the 9th century, this early medieval stronghold was a pivotal political center for the Piast dynasty and played a key role in the formation of the Polish state. Many historians link the site to the 'Calisia' settlement recorded by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, highlighting its importance on the ancient Amber Road. The reserve features the original foundations of the Romanesque St. Paul's Collegiate Church, built in 1145, which once served as a ducal necropolis. Following its destruction by the Teutonic Knights in 1331, the settlement moved to its current location, leaving the old fort to decay. Today, the open-air museum showcases reconstructed wooden fortifications, huts, and workshops that demonstrate the craftsmanship and lifestyle of the 11th and 12th centuries.
