The Old Town of Cieszyn has over a thousand years of history and is one of the oldest settlements in Poland, with its legendary founding dated back to 810. On the Castle Hill stands the 11th-century Romanesque Rotunda of St. Nicholas, which is among the most precious architectural monuments in the country. For centuries, Cieszyn served as the capital of the Duchy of Teschen and a major cultural hub at the crossroads of Polish, Czech, and German influences. The town square is noted for its baroque and neoclassic townhouses and the distinctive 19th-century town hall. Following World War I in 1920, the city was divided along the Olza River into Polish and Czechoslovak parts, significantly shaping its modern identity. Today, Cieszyn is celebrated for its well-preserved medieval street layout, welcoming alleys like 'Cieszyn Venice,' and an animated cross-border atmosphere.
