Biebrza Marshes (Poland)

Weather…

The Biebrza Marshes, which form the absolute core of Poland's largest national park, profoundly represent one of the last intact wildernesses and the most extensive continuous wetland complex in Europe. The freely meandering Biebrza River floods vast sections of the valley every spring, constantly creating a dynamic, almost completely impassable mosaic of deeply waterlogged peat bogs, expansive reed beds, and swampy alder forests. This immense, highly inaccessible ecosystem is an absolute paradise for ornithologists, as it shelters over 270 recorded bird species, notably including critically endangered species like the aquatic warbler and the greater spotted eagle, which either breed here or rest during migration. Furthermore, the dense, misty swamps serve as the most crucial sanctuary for Poland's largest moose population; these magnificent animals can frequently be observed foraging in knee-deep water at dusk. The deeply pristine nature is best explored via specially constructed wooden boardwalks or on a multi-day, completely silent kayaking expedition.
