Narwiański National Park (Poland)

Weather…

The Narwiański (Narew) National Park in northeastern Poland protects one of the most unusual and complex hydrological systems in Europe. Often referred to as the 'Polish Amazon', the Narew River here loses its single riverbed and fans out into a bewildering, anastomosing labyrinth of countless parallel and continuously intersecting waterways, channels, and oxbow lakes. This massive swamp area, which can almost exclusively be explored via traditional flat-bottomed punts ('Pychówka') or extensive wooden boardwalks, is a unique, highly dynamic wetland. The vast reedbeds, sedge meadows, and periodically flooded wet pastures constitute one of Poland's most valuable habitats, acting as a gigantic natural sponge. This water-rich ecosystem attracts flocks of marsh and water birds, including the graceful marsh harrier, the park's symbolic animal. Furthermore, the undisturbed silence and general inaccessibility of the Narew Valley provide a safe haven for thriving populations of beavers and otters.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (April-May) is the best time for the return of waterbirds and the call of the bittern. Autumn sees huge flocks of starlings and cranes gathering.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is magical with mist over the reed beds and birds becoming active. Dusk often brings the arrival of starlings to their roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Do not enter the reed beds to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Stay on the observation platforms and marked trails.
🎒
What to bring
A spotting scope or powerful binoculars are good for observing often distant waterbirds. Wellington boots are highly recommended for the wet banks.
🧭
Getting there
The park lies about 30 km east of Białystok and is reachable by car or bus. Marked paths lead from the village of Wizna to the observation points.
🦌
What to expect
Waterbirds often keep a large distance; a quiet, lengthy stay at a viewpoint pays off. Untouched nature rewards patient visitors with impressive flocks.
