Tykocin Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Tykocin Castle was once one of the most vital royal fortresses in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, strategically positioned near the Narew River. Originally built in the 15th century by the Gasztołd family, it was significantly expanded by King Sigismund II Augustus in the mid-16th century, becoming the primary royal arsenal and home to the national treasury and state library. The castle's most famous historical moment occurred in 1705, when King Augustus II the Strong founded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest honor, within its walls. Throughout the 18th century, the fortress lost its strategic value and was largely dismantled for building materials, leaving only foundations behind. However, a remarkable private reconstruction project initiated in the early 21st century has brought the castle back to life, following meticulous historical and archaeological research. Today, the partially restored brick fortress serves as a museum, showcasing military history and the grand lifestyle of the Polish monarchy, and remains a symbol of the region's rich medieval past.
