Project Riese (Poland)

Weather…

Project Riese was one of Nazi Germany's most mysterious and extensive construction undertakings in the Owl Mountains and at Książ Castle in present-day Poland. Between 1943 and 1945, under extreme time pressure and utilizing thousands of forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners, massive underground tunnel and chamber systems were driven into the hard gneiss rock. The exact purpose remains a subject of historical debate today; theories range from a bomb-proof Führer Headquarters to underground armament factories for 'wonder weapons.' The project was never completed, and many tunnels were blown up by the Wehrmacht shortly before the war's end or left unfinished. Today's accessible parts, such as Osówka or Włodarz, bear witness to the sheer scale of the endeavor and the unimaginable suffering of prisoners from the Groß-Rosen concentration camp. The labyrinthine passages and massive concrete structures serve as a dark memorial to the megalomania and brutality of the Nazi regime in the final phase of the war.
