Broumov Walls (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Broumov Walls (Broumovské stěny) are a distinctive, approximately 12-kilometer-long sandstone ridge near the town of Broumov. This National Nature Reserve is known for its wild, rugged rock formations, deep gorges and unique views. The rocks form a natural fortress that served as a refuge in the Middle Ages. A network of hiking trails opens up the fascinating world of rocks. One of the most famous places is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on the summit of Hvězda (Star), from where there is a spectacular view. The rock formations often have imaginative names, such as the 'Stone Mushrooms' or the 'Devil's Mouth'. The gorges, such as the Kovářova rokle, offer a cool refuge in summer. The Broumov Walls are less crowded than other rock cities in the region and offer an intense nature experience in a quiet and original landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The striking sandstone ridge is generally accessed via well-marked trails that ascend from surrounding villages in northeastern Bohemia. Visitors typically hike into the deep ravines and up to the viewpoints directly from these local settlements.
📅
Best season
The most popular time to visit the bizarre rock formations is typically between May and October when the weather is generally mild. Winter exploration is possible but often risky, as snow and ice accumulate heavily inside the deep, shaded ravines.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by steep ascents, narrow rocky passes, and paths winding through deep forested ravines. Hikers can expect numerous carved stone steps, exposed roots, and challenging inclines leading up to the main scenic ridge.
🎒
What to bring
Proper hiking footwear with strong ankle support is crucial for safely negotiating the rocky stairs and uneven ravine floors. Carrying sufficient water, snacks, and extra layers of clothing is highly advisable due to cooler temperatures in the shade.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors generally park their vehicles at designated starting points in villages located at the foot of the ridge, such as Slavný or Machov. These local parking areas are typically clearly signed and may charge a small fee during the high season.
⚠️
Safety
Extra caution is required when walking near the edges of the high sandstone walls and steep drop-offs, as many viewpoints lack barriers. Falling rocks and slippery conditions after rain are significant natural hazards in the deep ravines.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive hike exploring the bizarre rock formations and traversing the ridge typically takes roughly four to six hours. Shorter, targeted walks to specific popular viewpoints can generally be completed in about two to three hours.
