Srebrna Góra Fortress (Poland)

Weather…

The Srebrna Góra (Silver Mountain) Fortress is a gigantic masterpiece of military architecture and is considered the largest mountain fortress in Europe. It was constructed between 1765 and 1777 on the orders of King Frederick the Great of Prussia to protect the newly conquered Silesia from Austrian attacks. The centerpiece of the fortress is the massive donjon, an impregnable polygonal citadel surrounded by a deep moat. Its brilliance was proven in 1807 when it successfully resisted a siege by Napoleon's troops and was never captured. Today, the awe-inspiring structure has wide-open views of the Owl Mountains, and lively historical reenactments by costumed soldiers transport visitors back to the 18th century.
