Manila Cathedral (Philippines)

Weather…

The Manila Cathedral, formally known as the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is the mother church of the Philippines located in Intramuros. The current structure is the eighth reconstruction of the cathedral, as previous iterations were destroyed by fires, earthquakes, and the massive destruction of World War II. It was rebuilt between 1954 and 1958 in the Neo-Romanesque style under the supervision of architect Fernando Ocampo. The facade features statues of prominent saints sculpted from Roman travertine, while the interior is adorned with animated stained-glass windows and intricate marble carvings. A significant highlight is the grand pipe organ, which consists of more than 4,500 pipes and is one of the largest in the country. The crypt located beneath the high altar is the final resting place for former Archbishops of Manila. Pope John Paul II elevated the cathedral to the status of a Minor Basilica during his visit in 1981. It serves as a central hub for religious life and a symbol of the city's historical resilience through centuries of colonial and modern history.
