Fort Santiago (Philippines)

Weather…

Fort Santiago is an imposing citadel within Intramuros, Manila, that served as a primary military defense fortress and a dreaded prison during the Spanish colonial period. Built at the mouth of the Pasig River, it is most famous for being the place where the national hero, Dr. José Rizal, was imprisoned before his execution in 1896. His final footsteps are marked by bronze footprints on the ground, leading from his cell to the execution site. During World War II, its dungeons were used by Japanese forces to torture and execute thousands of prisoners. Today, Fort Santiago is a tranquil historical park, its restored monumental gate and quiet gardens serving as a solemn memorial to the suffering and heroism that unfolded within its walls.
