Intramuros (Philippines)

Weather…

Intramuros, Latin for 'within the walls,' is the historic heart of Manila and the center of Spanish colonial power in Asia for over 300 years. Founded in 1571 by Miguel López de Legazpi, this 0.67-square-kilometer fortified city was built to protect the seat of government from foreign invasions and pirate attacks. Within its massive stone walls and bastions lay grand churches, palaces, and universities. Although it was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Manila in 1945, many of its key structures, like the San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago, have been meticulously restored. Today, wandering through its cobblestone streets gives a palpable sense of the colonial past and Filipino resilience.
