Malacañang Palace (Philippines)

Weather…

Malacañang Palace, situated on the north bank of the Pasig River in Manila, has served as the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the Philippines since 1863. Originally built in 1750 by Spanish aristocrat Luis Rocha as a private summer house, the estate was purchased by the state in 1825. The building is a prime example of colonial 'Bahay na Bato' architecture and has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the centuries. Significant sections include the Kalayaan Hall, the oldest standing part of the palace, and the Ceremonial Hall used for state functions. Today, the complex also houses a museum that documents the nation's political history and the terms of various presidents. The name is believed to derive from the Tagalog phrase 'Ma lakan diyan,' meaning 'a great man lives there.' It remains a central symbol of Filipino sovereignty and was the focal point of the 1986 People Power Revolution.
