Yby Yaú, a town in the Concepción Department of northern Paraguay, lies about 460 kilometres north of Asunción at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 5, making it an important traffic junction between the Concepción, San Pedro and Amambay departments. The name comes from Guaraní and means red earth, referring to the typical lateritic soils of the region. The town was recognised as an independent municipality in 1991 and developed rapidly thanks to its strategic location. With around 22 000 inhabitants Yby Yaú is today an important supply and logistics centre. Economically the town relies on cattle ranching, soybean, maize and yerba mate farming and transport services. Several gas stations, hotels, restaurants and logistics companies operate here, alongside an important police and customs control station. Notable sights include the modern parish church, the Mercado Municipal and the nearby Sierra de Amambay with its caves and indigenous rock paintings.
