Vallemí, a town in the Concepción Department in the far north of Paraguay, lies on the right bank of the Paraguay River near the border with Brazil and is known nationwide as the capital of Paraguay's cement industry. It was founded in 1928, when the Italian entrepreneur Giorgio Vallenari (after whom the name Vallemí is derived) discovered a large limestone deposit here and built a cement factory. Today it is the seat of the Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC), the largest and most important cement plant in Paraguay, which covers a significant share of the national demand for cement. With around 9 000 inhabitants Vallemí is a small but strategically important town. Economically it relies on cement production, lime quarrying, river shipping and small-scale agriculture. The town lies in a scenically impressive region with the Cerros Memby and Vallemí hills, whose limestone cliffs and caves are geological highlights. Notable sights include the cement plant, the historic parish church and the karst landscape with its dripstone caves.
