Horqueta, a town in the Concepción Department of northern Paraguay, lies about 50 kilometres south-east of the departmental capital in a region where agriculture is dominated by yerba mate, tobacco, cassava and cattle ranching. The town was founded in 1864 and grew over the twentieth century into one of Paraguay's most important tobacco producers; the tobacco industry is still a major economic factor, with several drying and processing facilities. With around 65 000 inhabitants Horqueta is the second-largest town in the department. Its residents live primarily from smallholder agriculture and cattle ranching. Notable sights include the historic parish church of San Isidro Labrador, the Mercado Municipal with its local specialities and the August Festival del Tabaco. The surrounding countryside features numerous large estancias and tobacco plantations that preserve the traditional rural character of the region. The town is an essential supply hub for the rural population of Concepción department, with a regional hospital.
