Cerro Guazú is a sacred mountain in the Amambay Department of northeastern Paraguay, holding immense cultural and ecological importance. It is part of a larger massif that serves as the spiritual center for the Paĩ Tavyterã indigenous people, who revere it as 'Jasuka Venda,' the site of creation. Geologically, it is a sandstone formation rising from the surrounding plateau, enveloped in dense subtropical forest. Significant archaeological discoveries have been made within the mountain's caves and rock shelters, including rock art dating back thousands of years, regarded as some of the most important in South America. The region supports an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including numerous medicinal plants used by indigenous communities for generations. Since the 1990s, the area has been under special protection to preserve both its cultural heritage and natural biodiversity from the pressures of expanding agribusiness. Cerro Guazú stands as a powerful symbol of resistance and identity for Paraguay's indigenous peoples.
