The Mukhaizna oil field is Oman's largest steam flood project for thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Originally operated by PDO, it has been operated by Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) since 2005 under a production sharing agreement. The field contains heavy oil, and the steam flood project is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The process involves injecting steam into the reservoir to heat the oil, reduce its viscosity, and make it easier to extract. The project has dramatically increased the field's production, from around 10,000 barrels per day to over 120,000 barrels per day. Mukhaizna is a prime example of the successful large-scale application of EOR technology to maximize Oman's oil reserves.
