The Nīca Plain, referred to in Latvian as Nīcas līdzenums, is a distinct coastal lowland area located south of Liepāja in southwestern Latvia. Formed on the ancient seabed of the Litorina Sea, most of the plain lies at an elevation of less than 5 meters above sea level. The terrain is exceptionally flat and features an extensive network of drainage ditches and dikes designed to manage water levels and prevent flooding. The Bārta River is the primary waterway, meandering through the plain before discharging into Lake Liepāja and creating rich wetland habitats. Soil composition is dominated by marine sands and peat deposits, supporting vast wet meadows and pastures used for cattle grazing. Historically, significant land reclamation projects in the 20th century transformed these marshlands into productive agricultural areas. The plain serves as a vital stopover point for migratory birds traveling along the East Atlantic Flyway, making it a key site for ornithological observation. Its proximity to the Baltic Sea ensures a maritime climate with mild winters and high atmospheric humidity throughout the year.

Reaching this expansive coastal area in southwestern Latvia is generally straightforward via regional roads connecting local villages. The flat landscape ensures that approaching the region by car or bicycle is relatively simple.

Late spring through early autumn is typically the most pleasant period for exploring the coastal plain. Wet seasons can significantly increase the water levels in the partially swampy sections of the terrain.

The ground here is exceptionally flat, though visitors will frequently encounter damp and marshy patches. Navigating the plain often involves walking on soft earth, coastal sand, or occasional wooden boardwalks.

Waterproof footwear is usually essential, especially if you plan to venture near the swampy areas of the plain. Windproof clothing is also highly recommended to block the breezes coming directly off the nearby Baltic coast.

Finding a spot to park is typically possible in the small towns and settlements bordering the plain. Designated gravel pull-offs can also be found along the main coastal routes crossing the region.

While the flat elevation poses little physical challenge, wandering into unmarked swampy zones can be risky. Visitors should generally stick to established trails to avoid sinking into the soft wetland mud.
