Duqm, on the coast of Al Wusta province, is Oman's newest major city: until 2011, it was a small fishing village with a few hundred inhabitants; today, about 25,000 people live here, with projected growth to 100,000 in the coming decades. The SEZAD special economic zone was established in 2011 and covers about 2,000 square kilometers with a port, shipyard, refinery, airport, and tourist zones. The Port of Duqm, with berths for ships up to 600 meters long, is one of the most modern on the Indian Ocean. The Oman Drydock, opened in 2011, is one of the largest in the region. About 20 kilometers north is the Duqm Rock Garden, a bizarre sandstone landscape formed by erosion. Duqm symbolizes the Sultanate of Oman's diversification strategy away from oil.
