Utsira is Norway's most remote and least populous municipality, located in the North Sea west of Haugesund. The island is world-renowned among ornithologists, as over 280 bird species have been recorded here, including many rare vagrants from Siberia and North America. The most distinctive landmark is the Utsira Lighthouse, with its light situated 68 metres above sea level. Historically, the inhabitants lived exclusively from fishing and maritime piloting, which shaped the character of the small settlements. Today, Utsira is also a pioneering site for renewable energy; in 2004, it launched the world's first combined wind-hydrogen project. The barren, windswept landscape gives a unique atmosphere of isolation and rugged beauty. The island is accessible by ferry from Haugesund and primarily attracts nature enthusiasts, artists, and birdwatchers.
