Træna is regarded as one of Norway's oldest settlements, with archaeological finds in the Kirkhelleren cave dating back 9,000 years. The archipelago lies far off the Helgeland coast, directly on the Arctic Circle. The striking silhouette of Sanna island with its pointed peaks, most notably Trænstaven, is visible from a great distance. While Husøya is the administrative center, Sanna features the most spectacular nature and the deepest historical insights. Once a year, this remote community transforms into one of the world's most exclusive event venues during the Træna Festival. Musicians from around the globe perform in the natural cathedral of the Kirkhelleren cave. Outside of the festival, Træna is a place of extreme natural experiences, shaped by the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter. The harsh climate has forged a tough and welcoming island community. Visitors reach Træna by express boat from Sandnessjøen or Nesna. Fishing remains the primary industry, which is also reflected in the local cuisine, fresh stockfish and crabs are staples here. Hiking up Trænstaven requires a sure foot but rewards with a 360-degree view over hundreds of small islands in the Atlantic. It is a destination for travelers seeking the edge of the inhabited world.
