Sandnessjøen is located on the island of Alsten in Nordland County and functions as the administrative center of Alstahaug Municipality. The town was established as a trading post in 1899 along the Alstenfjord and has evolved into a significant transport hub for the Helgeland region. Geographically, the area is dominated by the striking Seven Sisters (Sju Søstre) mountain range, with peaks reaching up to 1072 meters above sea level. The modern economy is built on offshore oil industry support, tourism, and the port, which serves as a key stop for the Hurtigruten coastal express. Historically, the region is deeply connected to the 17th-century poet-priest Petter Dass, whose legacy is preserved at the nearby Alstahaug church site. Major infrastructure such as the Helgeland Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge opened in 1991, provides essential mainland connectivity. Maritime traditions and service industries continue to shape the local identity of the approximately 6000 residents.
