Slogen is one of the most iconic mountain peaks in the Sunnmøre Alps of Western Norway, reaching an elevation of 1,564 meters. Located by the Hjørundfjord in Møre og Romsdal county, it is renowned for its strikingly symmetrical pyramidal shape. Although it appears impossibly steep from a distance, a well-established trail leads from the village of Øye to the summit. The mountain gained international fame through the writings of British mountaineer William Cecil Slingsby, who regarded it as providing one of the finest views in Europe. Geologically, the peak is composed of crystalline bedrock that was sharply chiseled by glacial action during the Quaternary period. The summit gives a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the jagged Sunnmøre range and the deep blue waters of the fjord, which reaches depths of over 400 meters. Climbing Slogen requires significant physical endurance, as the ascent begins near sea level and covers nearly the full elevation. At its base lies the historic Hotel Union Øye, which has hosted mountain explorers since 1891.

Getting there

The ascent usually begins from sea level near the fjord at Øye or from a nearby mountain lodge like Patchellhytta. The trail starting directly from the fjord is known for being extremely steep right from the very beginning.

Best season

Mid-summer to early autumn is widely considered the best time for an ascent. Snow can persist on the upper slopes until late June, making earlier climbs significantly more difficult and requiring specialized winter equipment.

The trail has an extremely steep and physically demanding hike through a rugged alpine environment. The final section towards the summit involves some easy scrambling on exposed rocky surfaces and loose scree.

What to bring

Solid hiking boots with excellent grip, plenty of drinking water, and weather-resistant clothing are absolutely essential. A map and compass are highly recommended due to the potential for rapidly changing mountain weather.

Parking spaces are usually available at the trailheads down in the valley or near the accommodations by the fjord. These areas tend to fill up very quickly on sunny summer weekends, so an early arrival is strongly recommended.

The final ridge leading to the summit is highly exposed; it is best to avoid the peak entirely in wet or heavily windy conditions. Hikers should maintain a steady, sustainable pace on the relentless steep sections to avoid exhaustion.
