Skjervøy is the administrative center of the island municipality of the same name in Troms County, located on the island of Skjervøya. The town is home to a long heritage as a commercial hub and fishing village, having held a central regional role since the 17th century. Geographically, Skjervøy is situated at the mouth of the Kvænangen Fjord, granting direct access to some of the most productive fishing grounds in the Norwegian Sea. A significant historical milestone occurred in 1896 when the famed polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen arrived here aboard the ship 'Fram', marking his first return to Norwegian soil after his legendary North Pole expedition. Today, the local economy is driven by modern fish processing plants and shipbuilding, with the Skjervøy Skipsverft shipyard serving as a major employer. During the winter season, the town has emerged as a premier center for orca and whale watching, as massive schools of herring draw these predators deep into the local fjords. Connectivity is maintained via the Skjervøy Bridge and tunnel system linking to the mainland, as well as being a daily port of call for the Hurtigruten coastal express.
