Somnath
Somnath is famous for its grand temple, known as the 'Eternal Shrine' because it was rebuilt many times after repeated destructions. It is the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a major pilgrimage center. The temple impresses with its Chalukya architecture and its spectacular location directly by the sea. The daily evening light and sound show, which narrates the turbulent history of the sanctuary, is particularly moving. Nearby is the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati rivers, where devotees take ritual baths. Also, Bhalka Tirth, the spot where Lord Krishna is said to have left the earth, is an important pilgrimage site. Local eateries offer traditional Indian delicacies. Somnath is well-connected via the Veraval railway station. The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to March, especially during the Mahashivratri festival.
