Molde Cathedral
Molde Cathedral (Molde domkirke) is the seat of the Bishop of Møre and stands as a prominent example of modern 20th-century Norwegian church architecture. The current building was consecrated in 1957, replacing a wooden cruciform church from 1887 that was entirely destroyed during German air raids in April 1940. Designed by architect Finn Bryn, the cathedral is a double-nave brick hall church featuring a freestanding bell tower, or campanile, that rises to a height of 50 meters. The interior design is minimalist yet evocative, with stained glass windows and rose motifs that reflect Molde's identity as the "City of Roses." A noteworthy feature is the altarpiece "The Resurrection" by Axel Ender, which miraculously survived the fire of the previous church and was subsequently incorporated into the new structure. With a seating capacity of approximately 900, the cathedral is one of the largest religious buildings in the region, serving as a vital center for worship and musical performances. Its architecture successfully blends traditional Christian symbolism with the clean aesthetic of Nordic modernism.
