Medieval Towers of Kočani (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The medieval towers of Kočani are distinctive stone defensive structures that define the city's historical landscape, serving as witnesses to the Ottoman era. Originally, there were more of these buildings in the city, but only two have been preserved: the Western Tower and the Eastern Tower (the latter now serving as a Clock Tower). The towers were likely built in the 16th or 17th century and served local Ottoman feudal lords as both residences and defensive fortifications. The architecture is characterized by massive stone walls, embrasures, and small windows on the upper floors, emphasizing their defensive nature. The Clock Tower, located on the left side of the Kočanska River, stands approximately 18.5 meters high and was later equipped with a clock mechanism to show time to the townspeople. These towers are rare examples of secular residential and defensive Balkan architecture from that period. Following extensive restoration work in recent years, they are now open to visitors and partially host small exhibitions on local history.
