Kočani Geothermal Fields (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Kočani geothermal field in eastern North Macedonia is one of the most significant low-temperature geothermal systems in the Balkans. The basin extends across the Kočani valley and utilizes hot water emerging from depths of up to 500 meters. Water temperatures remain constantly between 75 and 80 degrees Celsius. Systematic utilization began in the 1980s with the 'Istok' project, which aimed to modernize regional agriculture through greenhouse heating. Currently, approximately 18 million cubic meters of thermal water are extracted annually to heat over 20 hectares of greenhouse space, primarily producing tomatoes and peppers for export. Besides agriculture, the energy is also used to heat public buildings in Kočani. The system is considered a model for sustainable energy use, as the water is partially reinjected into the ground after heat transfer to maintain pressure in the reservoir.
