Kale Fortress (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Kale Fortress in Skopje stands on the highest point in the city overlooking the Vardar River and is a primary symbol of the nation's capital. Its origins trace back to the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who ordered the construction of the first fortifications using materials from the ruined city of Scupi. The current walls primarily date from the medieval and Ottoman periods, having been rebuilt multiple times following wars and natural disasters. The catastrophic 1963 earthquake caused significant damage, leading to extensive long-term restoration projects to preserve the landmark. Today, the fortress serves as a major archaeological site and a popular viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Skopje. Ongoing excavations have uncovered artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as remnants of medieval palaces, underscoring the hill's continuous strategic importance over millennia.
