Its origins trace back to the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who ordered the construction of the first fortifications using materials from the ruined city of Scupi. The current walls primarily date from the medieval and Ottoman periods, having been rebuilt multiple times following wars and natural disasters. The catastrophic 1963 earthquake caused significant damage, leading to extensive long-term restoration projects to preserve the landmark. Today, the fortress serves as a major archaeological site and a popular viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Skopje. Ongoing excavations have uncovered artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as remnants of medieval palaces, underscoring the hill's continuous strategic importance over millennia.

Visiting
Kale Fortress is a vast open-air site on the highest point of Skopje and can be entered for free at any time. The area inside the fortress walls is accessible, but there are no covered exhibitions.
Typical hours
As it is a freely accessible ruin, there are no opening hours. Visiting during daylight is safest and most rewarding, as the paths and walls are clearly visible then.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the fortress grounds without restrictions. The view of Skopje and the surrounding mountains from the walls provides spectacular panoramic shots.
Time needed
Allow at least one hour for a walk around the entire fortress grounds to enjoy the walls and the view. Those who want to explore the history and take many photos should plan for two hours.
Combine with
The fortress is located above Skopje's Old Town and can be excellently combined with a visit to the Stone Bridge and the Old Bazaar. The Macedonian Museum is also just a short walk away.
Getting there
The fortress is reachable on foot from Skopje city center in about 20 minutes via a steep path. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or bus to the foot of the hill and walk the last meters.
Insider tip
Visit the fortress in the late afternoon to experience the sunset over Skopje, which is sweeping from here. Bring a jacket, as it can be windy at the top, especially in the evening.
