Historical site
The Kičevo Fortress, locally known as Kitino Kale, is situated on a prominent hill in the city center and serves as a primary archaeological landmark of the region. Excavations at the site have revealed layers of settlement dating from the Iron Age through antiquity to the late Middle Ages. The fortress gained significant strategic importance during the Byzantine era, recorded under the name Kitsavis, acting as a regional military stronghold. During the medieval period, it was further fortified to protect the population, eventually transitioning into an Ottoman administrative site. Currently, the area is developed into a recreational park where remnants of ancient walls and tower foundations are preserved for public viewing. The site has a commanding view of the Kičevo valley and the surrounding mountain ranges, reflecting the deep historical roots of this urban center.

Visiting
The fortress ruins on the hill are freely accessible from the outside at any time, offering a wide view over Kičevo. The interior is not secured; entering the ruins is at your own risk and is usually possible without restrictions.
Typical hours
As it is a freely accessible ruin, there are no fixed opening hours. Visiting during daylight and in good weather is most rewarding, as the paths are safer then.
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere on the site without restrictions. Sunset is an especially atmospheric time for photos, when the light paints the stones in golden hues.
Time needed
Allow about 45 minutes to an hour for the climb and a thorough exploration of the ruins. Those who want to enjoy the view and take many photos can easily spend an hour and a half on site.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a walk through the center of Kičevo, which is just a few minutes away on foot. The Church of Saint Peter and Paul in the city is also a nearby and worthwhile addition.
Getting there
The fortress is reachable on foot from the city center of Kičevo in about 15 to 20 minutes via a steep hiking path. Alternatively, you can drive to the foot of the hill and walk the last meters.
Insider tip
Wear sturdy footwear, as the climb is on unpaved and rocky paths. Bring enough water, especially on hot days, as there are no supply options on the hill.
