The Treska River Canyon near Drugovo is an impressive natural monument in the upper course of the Treska River in western North Macedonia. This section is characterized by deep gorges, vertical limestone cliffs, and an untouched karst landscape shaped by the erosive force of water over millions of years. The canyon forms a natural passage between the surrounding mountain ranges and houses a variety of caves, some of which are not yet fully explored. Ecologically, the area is of great significance as the clean river provides a habitat for protected fish species, and the dense riparian forests are havens for rare birds. Getting there
Reaching this particular rugged and rocky canyon typically requires driving to the general vicinity of Drugovo and then locating steep, informal dirt paths leading sharply down into the river gorge.
Best season
The warmer, drier months from late spring through mid-summer offer by far the best conditions, as the river water levels are usually safely manageable and the surrounding slippery stones are completely dry.
Terrain & paths
Expect challenging and highly uneven footing, consisting largely of extremely loose rocks, massive boulders, and steep, unstable embankments plunging very sharply toward the fast-flowing river water.
What to bring
Extremely sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots with aggressive grip are completely critical for safely navigating the loose stones, along with extra water and strong sun protection for exposed, hot sections.
Parking
Vehicles are generally left tucked safely off the main shoulder near Drugovo wherever the limited space safely permits, just before beginning the relatively short but highly demanding downward trek.
Safety
Keep a very generous distance from the immediate edge during any wet weather, as the steep rocky canyon sides become incredibly, dangerously slippery and the wild river currents can run devastatingly fast.
Time needed
Carefully scrambling down into the canyon, thoroughly admiring and photographing the dramatic natural scenery, and hiking steeply back up typically occupies roughly two to three hours of concentrated effort.
