Kalmthoutse Heide (Belgium)

Weather…

Kalmthoutse Heide is a cross-border nature reserve located in the north of Antwerp province, forming part of the Kalmthoutse Heide-De Zoom Border Park. Spanning approximately 3.750 hectares on the Belgian side, it is one of the oldest and largest protected areas in the country. The landscape is characterized by a fascinating mix of heathland, shifting sand dunes, marshes, and pine forests. Historically, the area was shaped by peat cutting and extensive grazing, but today the focus remains entirely on biodiversity conservation. The heath provides a habitat for rare species such as the smooth snake, the European nightjar, and various species of dragonflies. In late summer, when the heather blooms in lively shades of purple, the park features a spectacular natural display. The reserve has faced significant challenges from devastating wildfires in the past, leading to the development of sophisticated fire management strategies. Numerous marked trails allow visitors to experience the tranquility and openness of this protected landscape, which serves as an essential ecological bridge between Belgium and the Netherlands.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The heather bloom from August to September is the most spectacular time to visit Kalmthoutse Heide, when the landscape turns purple. Spring also provides many migratory birds, while summer brings warm days well-suited for reptiles.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning hours are handy for hearing the song of woodlarks and watching wild rabbits. Just before sunset, shadows lengthen and your chances of spotting roe deer or foxes in the open areas increase.
📜
Etiquette
Entering the heathland outside the paths is not allowed to protect the fragile vegetation. Dogs must be kept on a lead, as loose dogs can disturb nesting birds.
🎒
What to bring
Light, bright clothing is advisable to avoid overheating in the open landscape. Binoculars with good magnification help identify rare bird species like the nightjar from a distance.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is reachable by train to Kalmthout station, then about 20 minutes on foot. Parking is available at the main entrances, for example at the 'De Nol' visitor centre.
🦌
What to expect
The open heath may look empty, but with patience and quiet behaviour you can find many hidden animals. Take your time for a slow walk and sit down at viewpoints now and then.
