Velp Hill Ridge (Netherlands)

Weather…

The hill ridge near Velp is part of the Veluwezoom National Park and represents one of the most prominent relief structures in the Netherlands. This formation was created by the enormous pressure of glacial ice during the Saale glaciation, which pushed existing layers of earth together like an accordion and piled them up to over 90 meters in height. The landscape features spectacular views over the IJssel Valley and is characterized by vast heathlands such as the Herikhuizerveld. Historically, the region was a favorite hunting ground for the nobility, which contributed to the preservation of large forest areas. Today, the Velp-Heuvelrug is a center for nature tourism and is home to a rich fauna, including red deer, fallow deer, and mouflons. The nearby Posbank pavilion is a well-known meeting point at one of the highest points of this ridge, famous for its intense purple heath blossom in August.
