Forest
The Kruisbergse Bos is located northwest of Doetinchem in the province of Gelderland and is a significant forested area developed on ancient river dunes. This geological feature gives the terrain an unusually varied profile by Dutch standards, with elevation differences of up to 25 meters. The forest was originally part of the De Kruisberg estate and today hosts a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees along with valuable heathlands. In the center of the area lies the former De Kruisberg manor, which later served as a prison, with a history dating back to the 19th century. The soil composition consists mainly of lime-poor sands, favoring specialized flora and fauna, including rare fungal species and woodpeckers. Hiking trails lead through dense forest sections and open dune landscapes, offering insight into the post-glacial formation of the Achterhoek region.
