Kulekhani Reservoir (Nepal)

Weather…

Kulekhani Reservoir, also known as Indra Sarowar, is Nepal's only storage-type hydropower facility, playing a critical strategic role in the national energy supply, especially during the dry season. Located in the Makwanpur district, it was constructed in the late 1970s and early 1980s with assistance from the Japanese government (JICA) and the World Bank. The 114-meter-high rockfill dam impounds the Kulekhani River, creating a seven-kilometer-long artificial lake amidst the mountains. The system operates through three cascaded power stations: Kulekhani I (60 MW), Kulekhani II (32 MW), and Kulekhani III (14 MW). As most of Nepal's hydropower plants are run-of-river, Kulekhani acts as the country's 'battery,' providing essential power during peak demand periods when other river levels are low. Despite challenges like sedimentation, the reservoir remains indispensable for energy security and has also become a popular destination for domestic tourism.
