Palmwag Concession (Namibia)

Weather…

The Palmwag Concession is a vast private nature reserve in northern Damaraland, covering an area of approximately 450,000 hectares. Geologically, the region is characterized by extensive basalt plains and prominent table mountains that formed around 132 million years ago. The area is traversed by the Uniab River, whose seasonal waterholes provide a critical resource for the diverse wildlife. Palmwag is internationally renowned as one of the most important sanctuaries for the endangered black rhino, as well as for desert-adapted elephants and lions. The local vegetation is highly adapted to extreme aridity, featuring endemic species such as Welwitschia mirabilis and numerous Commiphora trees. The concession is managed through a joint partnership, with a portion of tourism revenue flowing directly back to local communities. Historically, the area served as a transit zone for nomadic pastoralists before it was established as a dedicated wildlife reserve in the 1970s.

🎒
What to bring
Essential gear includes ample supplies of drinking water, spare tires for your vehicle, comprehensive sun protection, sturdy hiking boots, and warm clothing for the chilly desert nights.

Parking
Parking is mostly limited to designated campsites or specific lodge areas within the concession, and visitors must strictly adhere to regulations prohibiting off-road driving in the reserve.
