The river originates near the town of Opuwo and carves its way through steep rock walls and groves of Makalani palms before reaching the Atlantic Ocean at the Skeleton Coast. While the riverbed appears dry on the surface for most of the year, constant underground water flow supports permanent vegetation and animals like desert elephants, lions, and giraffes. The area's geology features ancient rock formations and vast floodplains that transform into lush greenery after rare rainfall. Historically, the river has been a critical resource for the nomadic Himba people, who have coexisted with this harsh yet beautiful environment for centuries.
