The Hoanib is one of Namibia's most critical linear oases, traversing the northern part of the country from east to west. With a length of approximately 270 kilometers, it provides a lifeline in the extremely arid Kaokoveld desert. The river originates in the hinterland south of Sesfontein and flows through deep gorges and vast alluvial plains before reaching the Atlantic at the Skeleton Coast. The Hoanib is particularly famous for its 'clay castles,' bizarre erosion formations made of ancient river silt found along its lower reaches. It is also renowned for its high density of desert-adapted elephants and the unique population of desert lions that occasionally trek all the way to the ocean. Since water mostly flows underground, deep-rooted Ana trees (Faidherbia albida) create a green canopy that features essential food and shade for numerous species. This fragile ecosystem remains one of the most pristine wilderness areas in Southern Africa.
