Maputo Bay, historically known as Delagoa Bay, is a prominent natural inlet of the Indian Ocean located in southern Mozambique. Spanning approximately 90 kilometers in length and up to 32 kilometers in width, the bay is shielded from the open sea by Inhaca Island and the Machangulo Peninsula. It serves as the discharge point for several major rivers, including the Komati, Maputo, and Tembe, creating a rich estuarine environment. Throughout history, the bay was a highly contested strategic prize among the Portuguese, British, and Boers, providing the primary maritime gateway to the Southern African interior. Today, Mozambique's capital city, Maputo, sits on its northwestern shore, hosting a vital deep-water port for regional trade. Ecologically, the bay is home to extensive mangrove forests and seagrass beds that support rare marine mammals such as dugongs. The completion of the Maputo-Katembe Bridge in 2018, the longest suspension bridge in Africa, has significantly enhanced connectivity across the bay's southern reaches.
