Borj Sud is a powerful fortress in Fes, perched on a hill south of the old medina, offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the city. It was built in the late 16th century, around 1582, during the reign of the Saadian Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. The fortress was part of a defensive strategy that included its counterpart, Borj Nord, primarily designed to keep watch over the often restless population of Fes. Its architecture shows strong European influence, particularly Portuguese military design, which is evident in its massive walls and square bastions. The structure is constructed mainly from rammed earth and stone, giving it a rugged, defensive character. Throughout its history, Borj Sud has served military functions and also as a site for astronomical observations to determine religious dates. Today, it is a popular spot for visitors to appreciate the vast scale of Fes el-Bali from above. Its strategic location highlights the historical significance of Fes as a major political and cultural power center in Morocco.
