Borj Sud

Borj Sud (South Tower) is a formidable 16th-century Saadian fortress standing on a prominent hill overlooking the sprawling Medina of Fez. Constructed by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, its primary historical purpose was less about defending the city from foreign invaders and more about keeping the rebellious population of Fes el Bali under the watchful eye of the authorities. Its robust, square design is a testament to the military architecture of the era.

Today, the fortress is best known for offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the ancient, labyrinthine medina below. Visitors can admire the dense cluster of minarets, green-tiled roofs, and the distant hills that frame the city. The site is particularly enchanting at sunrise or sunset when the soft light bathes the ancient city in a warm, golden glow.

While the interior is not always fully accessible to the public, the exterior terraces and the surrounding landscape provide a tranquil escape from the bustling souks and narrow alleyways of the city center. It remains one of the most iconic landmarks for understanding the strategic and geographic layout of imperial Fez.
