Royal Palace of Fez (Morocco)

Weather…

The Royal Palace of Fez, also known as Dar al-Makhzen, is one of the most impressive royal residences in Morocco, sprawling over an area of approximately 80 hectares. It was originally established in the 13th century during the Marinid dynasty when Fez became the capital of the empire. Although the interior of the palace is closed to the public, its monumental gates on the Place des Alaouites are world-famous. The seven golden gates, made of solid brass in the 1960s and 1970s, are adorned with complex geometric patterns and fine carvings, showcasing the pinnacle of Moroccan craftsmanship. The palace complex includes magnificent gardens, mosques, and an ancient madrasa, emphasizing the site's historical and spiritual significance. Behind the walls lie expansive courtyards featuring intricate zellij tile mosaics and carved cedar wood ceilings. As a seat for the monarch during his visits to Fez, the palace remains a potent symbol of national power and tradition. It stands at the transition point between the ancient Fès el-Bali and the Marinid-built Fès el-Jdid district.
