Draa (Morocco)

Weather…

The Oued Draa is Morocco's longest river, with a total length of approximately 1,100 kilometers. It is formed in the High Atlas by the confluence of the Dades and Imini rivers, initially flowing southeast before turning west toward the Atlantic Ocean. Much of its lower course is now typically dry, as water is heavily diverted for the irrigation of the palmeraies in the upper Draa Valley. The river only reaches its mouth north of Tan-Tan during exceptionally heavy rainfall events. Historically, the Draa Valley was a vital route for trans-Saharan caravans transporting gold, salt, and spices. The numerous fortified villages (ksour) and palm groves along its path attest to a rich cultural heritage. The river also provides the lifeblood for a series of oases that act as a buffer against the encroaching Sahara Desert. Prehistoric rock carvings found in the region prove that the valley was once significantly wetter and more fertile. Today, preserving this oasis landscape is a primary goal of Moroccan environmental policy.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this extensive river valley is primarily via the N9 highway running south from Ouarzazate towards Zagora. The road closely follows the palm-lined oasis, offering numerous turn-offs to smaller villages and scenic river viewpoints.
📅
Best season
The convenient times to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the temperatures are mild and the palm groves are bustling. Summer months bring scorching desert heat, making daytime exploration very uncomfortable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The valley presents a memorable contrast between arid, rocky desert plains and the lush, green ribbon of date palms along the watercourse. Terrain near the riverbed can be soft and sandy, while the surrounding hills are steep and barren.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable, breathable clothing and sun protection are essential all year round. If you plan to hike through the palm groves or nearby dunes, lightweight but closed walking shoes and a good water bottle are highly recommended.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is generally straightforward; you can leave your vehicle safely in designated spots at kasbahs, hotels, or wide pull-outs along the N9 road. Always ensure you do not block narrow village access roads when parking in the oases.
⚠️
Safety
The primary danger is the intense desert sun; always stay hydrated and wear protective headgear. While exploring the groves, be respectful of local agricultural lands, and be aware that the river can occasionally experience sudden flash floods.
⏱️
Time needed
Driving the length of the valley takes at least a full day, though many choose to spend two or three days stopping at various historic kasbahs. A shorter visit of a few hours is excellent for enjoying a stroll through one of the many date palm oases.
