Nyunzu is a town and territory in the Tanganyika province in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Strategically located, Nyunzu serves as an important railway hub on the SNCC (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer du Congo) line, connecting the port of Kalemie on Lake Tanganyika with the country's interior. The geography is characterized by vast savannas and hilly landscapes used for agriculture and livestock farming. The region is known for its deposits of coal and other minerals, though systematic extraction is still in its early stages. Historically, Nyunzu has suffered from ethnic tensions between the Twa and Bantu communities, which led to significant displacements and humanitarian challenges in recent years. The town itself is a commercial center for agricultural products such as peanuts, maize, and rice. Despite the rich resources, social infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, remains heavily underfunded. Efforts toward peacebuilding and economic revival are crucial for the future stability of the region.
