Moba, formerly known as Baudouinville, is a port town and territory in Tanganyika province on the southwestern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The town is tucked away on the slopes of the Marungu Mountains, which drop steeply into the lake, creating a dramatic landscape. Moba serves as a key transit point for trade across Lake Tanganyika, particularly for fishing and agricultural products from its fertile hinterland. During the colonial era, the town was a prominent center for Catholic missions, still reflected today in the architecture of its cathedral. The region produces substantial quantities of wheat, potatoes, and beans, which thrive due to the temperate climate in the mountains. Historically, Moba was the site of significant fighting during various rebel uprisings in the eastern part of the country. Despite its economic potential, the town suffers from poor connectivity to the national power grid and road network. The port of Moba is crucial for commodity trade with Zambia and Tanzania, though it is currently in urgent need of renovation.
