Heri es-Souani (Morocco)

Weather…

Heri es-Souani is a massive complex of royal granaries and stables in Meknes, built during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th century. It was part of the ambitious imperial construction program that transformed Meknes into Morocco's capital. The complex was designed to store vast quantities of grain and house up to 12,000 horses of the imperial army. Its architecture features walls several meters thick and a sophisticated system of underground water channels that maintained a constant cool temperature indoors. Adjacent to the granaries is the Agdal Basin, a vast artificial lake that served both as a water reservoir and for irrigating the royal gardens. The devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 destroyed much of the roofing, resulting in the forest-like structure of massive arches seen today. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage landmark and an impressive testament to 17th-century logistics.
