Zawiya of Moulay Idris I (Morocco)

Weather…

The Zawiya of Moulay Idris I is located in the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and is considered one of the most important religious sites in Morocco. It houses the tomb of Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who established the first Islamic state in Morocco in 788 AD. The current architecture of the complex largely dates back to the time of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 18th century, who extensively expanded the sanctuary and adorned it with a distinctive green tiled roof. Every year in August, one of the country's largest religious festivals (moussem) takes place here, where thousands of pilgrims pay homage to the founding father. For centuries, access to the city center and the zawiya was strictly restricted for non-Muslims, but today the mausoleum serves as a profound symbol of national identity. The facility includes a prayer hall, an inner courtyard, and the lavishly decorated tomb, which is a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship.
