Bab Mansour Gate (Morocco)

Weather…

Bab Mansour el-Aleuj is the monumental main gateway to the imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail in Meknes. It is regarded as one of the most magnificent examples of Moorish architecture in North Africa. Construction began toward the end of Moulay Ismail's reign and was completed in 1732 by his son, Moulay Abdallah. The gate is named after the architect Mansour, a Christian convert to Islam. Particularly striking are the massive marble columns on its flanks, which were originally brought from the nearby Roman settlement of Volubilis. The facade is adorned with complex zellige mosaics and green ceramic tiles typical of Meknes craftsmanship. Along the top, Arabic inscriptions praise the gate and the Sultan. Today, the gate stands as an impressive symbol of former imperial power and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the historic city of Meknes.
